The building structures of the museum and of the next door located Canoviano Café look identical with their eye-catching triangular roofs made of giant steel plates. The main gallery with its 4.8-meter-tall ceiling is used to hold uniquely themed exhibitions several times a year. The steel surfaces designed to resonate with the gently sloping topography can be seen both as roofs and as uplifts in the earth, and they help fuse the architecture with the landscape.

We may not have a clear image of what is in store, but we can delineate parts, on the basis of what has already been invented. Concrete, a durable and long-lasting material, aligns with the architect’s ethos of creating structures that stand the test of time. The museum’s facade not only tells a visual story but also underscores the importance of responsible material choices in contemporary architecture. Ando has prioritized accessibility, ensuring that the museum is well-connected to public transportation and pedestrian pathways. This intentional design choice fosters a sense of community engagement and invites people from all walks of life to partake in the world of design. The 21_21 Design Sight Museum is a design museum located in Roppongi designed by internationally acclaimed architect Tadao Ando.. The museum is discretely positioned in the left back corner of the garden behind the Midtown building.

Our concept is to ponder how the world will look in a year which is coincidentally also the name of this institute. ‘The Original’ doesn’t contain only products from the history of design, but also recent items created in the last two decades, equally well-known and treated as if they were always recognizable. Open to the sky, the courtyard can be used to convey large objects to the lower level.
21_21 DESIGN SIGHT is located in the garden of a redevelopment, and it is mostly buried underground due to zoning regulations. Only its two steel roofs, folded like origami, are visible above ground. ‘We live surrounded by a diversity of designs, but we ask how many of them deserve the title of The Original. This exhibition calls attention to products created with genuine verve, fundamental charm, purity, boldness, and strength, each of which we call The Original,’ explained Takahiro Tsuchida. Located in the beautiful Midtown Garden, a gateway to Hinokicho Park in Minato-ku, 21_21 DESIGN SIGHT enjoys a prime position where visitors to the garden are seamlessly drawn to the site.
Despite its minimalist features, the space 'asks' for your attention. Outside light comes in through the large windowpanes and the inner courtyard on the basement floor, with the concrete spaces lit up by spotlights that are placed here and there to highlight the individual exhibition pieces. The Design Sight Museum is not merely a display space but a hub for creativity and design exploration. The building serves as a platform for exhibitions, workshops, and events that celebrate the diverse facets of design. From industrial design to interactive installations, the museum’s typology caters to a broad spectrum of design disciplines.
It's important to note that operating hours, days of closure, and ticket prices for Gallery 1&2 and Gallery 3 may vary based on the specific programs running. 21_21 DESIGN SIGHT is a visionary space that celebrates and explores the innovation of design. It inspires visitors to look beyond the conventional and explore the limitless possibilities of design.

Design mavens arrive at a reception area and then descend to the museum’s main floor and its two galleries by way of Japan’s only trapezoidal elevator or a floating concrete stairway. Echoing the building’s geometric mantra, one gallery is a trapezoid illuminated by indirect light from above. The other is a 16-foot-tall rectangle with a row of columns along one edge.

Whether you’re a design professional or simply someone who appreciates the beauty and functionality of well-thought-out design, 21_21 DESIGN SIGHT offers a unique and enriching experience that is sure to ignite your imagination. The facade of the Design Sight Museum is a study in architectural expression. Ando’s use of concrete, with its raw and textural qualities, adds a layer of authenticity to the exterior. The play of light and shadow on the concrete surface throughout the day enhances the visual impact, turning the facade into a dynamic element of the overall design. Most of the exhibitions and workshops here focus on the theme of “everyday life,” and explore the often underappreciated world of design that is hidden in plain sight.
Tokyo Midtown was created to be the center of design culture in Japan, driven by facilities including 21_21 DESIGN SIGHT, Suntory Museum of Art and Tokyo Midtown Design Hub. Nearby Tokyo Midtown is home to The National Art Center, Tokyo, Mori Art Museum, the design-themed complex AXIS, architecture specialist TOTO Gallery-MA and a number of design offices. 21_21 DESIGN SIGHT is itself enhenced by synergy with those facilities in the area.
21_21 DESIGN SIGHT is situated on a land surrounded by open public space. Our aim was to design a structure asserting itself as a design museum without disturbing the ambience of the natural environment surrounding it. In order to achieve this, we decided to place 80% of the floor space of the museum underground.
