We look forward to showing you More of the World for Less on your next vacation. Gate 1 Travel sells its river cruises with air or as cruise-only, the latter being a great option for passengers who are tacking a cruise onto a longer trip to Europe. As Gate 1 is also a tour operator, the company makes it easy to pair river cruises with land tours. Gate 1 Travel has provided quality, affordable escorted tours, river cruises and vacation packages for 40 years.

A full 80% of rooms offer French balconies, providing private views as the stunning riverbanks unfold. What’s more, rooms can be configured with one or two beds; when configured with one, you’ll sleep in comfort in a bed that is larger than a U.S. full-sized. With Gate 1 Travel, there is never more than one included excursion per day, and all of them last approximately two to four hours.
How Price, Inclusions and Booking Policies Compare on Gate 1 vs. Viking River Cruises
Additionally, the ship does not offer a speciality dining venue or option of a light lunch buffet in the lounge. That said, Monarch Empress does have some surprising touches of luxury such as sparkling wine with breakfast, which you normally only get with more expensive upscale lines. On Gate 1 passengers settle onboard gratuities at the end of the cruise and the suggested amount is provided on the travel documents and can vary from itinerary to itinerary. However, the recommended amount is around $14 per person, per day for the crew. Additionally, the suggested gratuity for the cruise director and activity director is $4 and $2 per passenger, per day, respectively. For shore excursions, the recommended gratuity for local guides is $3 per person and $2 per passenger for drivers.
Travel confidently
Again - not Gate 1's fault.Would we do another Gate 1 river cruise? Absolutely - though we might opt for a more predictably cooler time of year. Finally - thanks for all of the support and info you provided, the questions you answered, leading up to the trip. Just some special recognition for several individuals that always seemed to go out of their way to make this a wonderful experience. But, Miklos, our tour director was superb in every way.

We've been on two GCT river cruises, and thoroughly enjoyed both. One was Bucharest to Budapest and the other was the Elbe trip. I thought the food was excellent, especially on the Elbe, but the emphasis is really on the area you are visiting. You learn more than the location of the nearest souvenir shop, and we've had really good program directors.
Kate our tour director/cruise director was wonderful. She was highly organized, friendly and had a wonderful sense of humor. I am quite certain that some days she felt like she was herding cats, but she was ALWAYS so caring and kind. Amsterdam is a beautiful, vibrant city. The whole river cruise was wonderful, and they are always feeding you so much great food and drinks!!
Poor customer service
The stateroom was perfect, lots of storage space. The Lady that took care of our room, Irena was the sweetest lady. The food was very good, the presentation was amazing.I look forward to take another river cruise on the Monarch Queen. Bart was very professional, accommodating and willing to help everyone.
With Viking, the recommended amount is stated in euros and is 18 euros per person, per day for the ship's staff and crew, and 2 euros per person, per day for the program director. On shore excursions, the recommended tip is 2 euros for local city guides and 1 euro for bus drivers. Viking provides passengers with the option of prepurchasing gratuities and paying them with the final account prior to travel, or having them automatically added to the shipboard account. I wanted to take a moment to express my heartfelt gratitude for Krisztina and the unforgettable trip from Munich to Budapest aboard the Monarch Queen rivers cruise. It was an incredible experience, and I can't thank her enough for being our tour director and guide throughout this journey. Her knowledge, enthusiasm, and dedication truly made this trip exceptional.
Choose Viking if you like to dine alfresco

They gave top notch service, always there to help. We had two wonderful nights of entertainment from outside the ship. The evening games and talent night were also outstanding.
Bogdan even made arrangements for us to visit a couple of castles that were not originally on our tour. I have spoke highly of Gate 1 to many others, and will continue to do so. This was the first time my husband and I have booked travel through Gate 1.
It was at the recommendation of our dear friends, who traveled with you previously and said you were the best. We just completed a Rhine River cruise, and it was spectacular and life-changing! We had never been on a river cruise before, and we thought it would be an extra special way to celebrate our 25th wedding anniversary.
Glasses, rather than bottles, of water are available throughout the day in the main lounge. There are 64 good-sized standard cabins and eight suites and although the majority has French balconies, there are no staterooms with walkout balconies. Built in 2015, the Monarch Empress is the newest of four river vessels operated by the Philadelphia-based tour operator Gate 1 Travel, and the first to be built for the company. With the tag line "More of the World for Less," Gate 1 offers affordable vacations for North Americans, Australians and a sprinkling of other English-speaking passengers. Independent vacations with Gate 1 are also popular. These trips are perfect for travelers who want to utilize Gate 1's planning and rate negotiation services but prefer maximum freedom to explore a destination.
