20 Iconic 1940s Hairstyles for Classy Women

40s hair styles

In the early years, hair was piled high on the crown, just like daytime looks. It could also be rolled in one or several buns or braids for a sleek look. And if a woman had beautiful long hair, by all means, she could wear it down as well. Silver screen stars also favored long hair, which probably inspired young women to keep their hair long.

Electric curling irons were now available, but some women will have continued to use the old hot irons to create waves. Hair grips (or bobby pins) were rare during the war, so women looked after them. For extra decoration, a small ribbon bow could be attached. Rolls had been part of 1940s hairstyling since the turn of the decade.

Fresh Short Bob with Bangs Looks to Style Your Blunt Cut

Add to that the myriad of hair accessories like snoods, braids, ribbons, bows, turbans and scarves. Pin up hairstyles are classic, beautiful and extremely sexy. There are looks for every hair length, from polished curls to chic waves to victory rolls and updos with hair scarves. You can easily create the most popular hairstyles from the 1940s today with the following tutorials! Check out these pin up hairstyles for all hair lengths.

Trends to look out for: Kpop inspired hairstyles

Begin by creating pincurls on damp hair and let them set. Once dry, gently brush out and style into a low updo, securing discreetly. This classic technique offers a sophisticated, polished look ideal for any formal occasion. Curls and volume were in style, especially above the forehead and on the ends (rolled under). When smooth hairstyle came into fashion in the late 1940s, hair was still curled under and around the face. To get this look, you’ll need a curling iron to give shape to your hair, and she gives you her best tips for curling your hair for a retro look!

40s hair styles

These polished looks would became an iconic hairstyle of the 1950s. When the bouffant tipped back over the forehead it became a a pompadour. Hair padding and fake swatches were needed to achieve the volume the pompadour and bouffant required. With so many women in the 1940s going to work in factories and taking time off to get their hair done, factory managers put in their own beauty salons. This reduced the time women were away from work and improved the morale of employees.

Victory Roll with Pin Curl and Combed out Waves

The key‍ elements of 40s ⁣hair styling techniques included‍ a focus on volume, waves, and‍ curls. Swing into style with an asymmetrical bumper bang, partnered with a snazzy victory roll on short hair. Kick off with a side swoop, rollin’ up one side for that off-kilter charm. Then, add some curls for a jazzy punch that’s both playful and polished. It’s a throwback that speaks spunk—perfect for the gal looking to jazz up the jukebox beat. Make waves with a high curly updo, crowned with a bumper bang—a true pop of pink panache.

40s hair styles

Headscarves

This hairstyle is perfect to embody the strong hard-working women of old. This 1940s hairstyle is one of the many ways to use your hair up. It basically consists on a rolling the bottom of your hair and style it on a roll, that’s it!

Make Victory Rolls Or Side Reverse Rolls

Begin by curling sections with a wide-barrel iron for voluptuous curls. Then, gather hair into a neat chignon at the nape, securing with pins. This hairstyle combines classic sophistication with modern elegance, perfect for any upscale occasion.

This tall hairstyle will put all the attention on you. Create a perfect pompadour by elongating your bangs and rolling them to the back of your head while doing this you have to try to create a bulk. Don’t worry if your hair is thin or short you can wear extensions to get the volume necessary for this look. Always remember to use the right products to keep your hair big and avoid flat hairstyles. These can be tricky at first if you're new to more involved hair styling. Pin-curls are a 1940s staple, and are necessary for many 1930s and 1950s hairstyles as well.

For example, the fringe could be set with an S-shaped wave and dressed to one side. Alternatively, it could be a mass of curls that sat high and slightly forward onto the face, as Betty Grable wore. There was also the full-forward roll that sat on the forehead – sleek and smooth like a barrel. Go retro with a twist in a half up, half down pompadour that’s all about the texture.

Nail that retro chic with a victory roll leading the charge, flanked by slick pin curls. Transition to elegance with combed-out waves cascading like a vintage dream. Get hands-on, twirl and comb, and watch the past meet present in your mirror. It’s a style statement that whispers class and shouts confidence. One ⁢of⁤ the most ⁣iconic⁤ styles of the 40s is the victory roll. This style involves rolling the hair away ⁢from the face and pinning it in place‍ to create a voluminous, ‌sweeping look.

Review of 21_21 Design Sight Tokyo, Japan, Asia

The building structures of the museum and of the next door located Canoviano Café look identical with their eye-catching triangular roofs made of giant steel plates. The main gallery with its 4.8-meter-tall ceiling is used to hold uniquely themed exhibitions several times a year. The steel surfaces designed to resonate with the gently sloping topography can be seen both as roofs and as uplifts in the earth, and they help fuse the architecture with the landscape.

Concrete, a durable and long-lasting material, aligns with the architect’s ethos of creating structures that stand the test of time. The museum’s facade not only tells a visual story but also underscores the importance of responsible material choices in contemporary architecture. Ando has prioritized accessibility, ensuring that the museum is well-connected to public transportation and pedestrian pathways. This intentional design choice fosters a sense of community engagement and invites people from all walks of life to partake in the world of design. The 21_21 Design Sight Museum is a design museum located in Roppongi designed by internationally acclaimed architect Tadao Ando.. The museum is discretely positioned in the left back corner of the garden behind the Midtown building.

Our concept is to ponder how the world will look in a year which is coincidentally also the name of this institute. ‘The Original’ doesn’t contain only products from the history of design, but also recent items created in the last two decades, equally well-known and treated as if they were always recognizable. Open to the sky, the courtyard can be used to convey large objects to the lower level.

21_21 DESIGN SIGHT is located in the garden of a redevelopment, and it is mostly buried underground due to zoning regulations. Only its two steel roofs, folded like origami, are visible above ground. ‘We live surrounded by a diversity of designs, but we ask how many of them deserve the title of The Original. This exhibition calls attention to products created with genuine verve, fundamental charm, purity, boldness, and strength, each of which we call The Original,’ explained Takahiro Tsuchida. Located in the beautiful Midtown Garden, a gateway to Hinokicho Park in Minato-ku, 21_21 DESIGN SIGHT enjoys a prime position where visitors to the garden are seamlessly drawn to the site.

Despite its minimalist features, the space 'asks' for your attention. Outside light comes in through the large windowpanes and the inner courtyard on the basement floor, with the concrete spaces lit up by spotlights that are placed here and there to highlight the individual exhibition pieces. The Design Sight Museum is not merely a display space but a hub for creativity and design exploration. The building serves as a platform for exhibitions, workshops, and events that celebrate the diverse facets of design. From industrial design to interactive installations, the museum’s typology caters to a broad spectrum of design disciplines.

It's important to note that operating hours, days of closure, and ticket prices for Gallery 1&2 and Gallery 3 may vary based on the specific programs running. 21_21 DESIGN SIGHT is a visionary space that celebrates and explores the innovation of design. It inspires visitors to look beyond the conventional and explore the limitless possibilities of design.

Design mavens arrive at a reception area and then descend to the museum’s main floor and its two galleries by way of Japan’s only trapezoidal elevator or a floating concrete stairway. Echoing the building’s geometric mantra, one gallery is a trapezoid illuminated by indirect light from above. The other is a 16-foot-tall rectangle with a row of columns along one edge.

Whether you’re a design professional or simply someone who appreciates the beauty and functionality of well-thought-out design, 21_21 DESIGN SIGHT offers a unique and enriching experience that is sure to ignite your imagination. The facade of the Design Sight Museum is a study in architectural expression. Ando’s use of concrete, with its raw and textural qualities, adds a layer of authenticity to the exterior. The play of light and shadow on the concrete surface throughout the day enhances the visual impact, turning the facade into a dynamic element of the overall design. Most of the exhibitions and workshops here focus on the theme of “everyday life,” and explore the often underappreciated world of design that is hidden in plain sight.

Tokyo Midtown was created to be the center of design culture in Japan, driven by facilities including 21_21 DESIGN SIGHT, Suntory Museum of Art and Tokyo Midtown Design Hub. Nearby Tokyo Midtown is home to The National Art Center, Tokyo, Mori Art Museum, the design-themed complex AXIS, architecture specialist TOTO Gallery-MA and a number of design offices. 21_21 DESIGN SIGHT is itself enhenced by synergy with those facilities in the area.

21_21 DESIGN SIGHT is situated on a land surrounded by open public space. Our aim was to design a structure asserting itself as a design museum without disturbing the ambience of the natural environment surrounding it. In order to achieve this, we decided to place 80% of the floor space of the museum underground.

21_21 DESIGN SIGHT exhibitions, news, and projects

21 21 design sight

The museum is nestled in a green park, which softens the sharp exterior. Temporary exhibitions typically focus on the role design plays in daily life and how we interact with it. The museum is near the Tokyo Midtown complex in Roppongi, a short walk from Nogizaka Station. An installation space dedicated to design, 21_21 DESIGN SIGHT is Tadao Ando’s concrete contribution to Tokyo Midtown. But conceptually, it is closely interwoven with the ideas of fashion great Issey Miyake. The aim of 21_21 Design Sight is to promote understanding and interest in design by involving designers, corporate employees, engineers, craftsmen and the general public.

Building Connections: The Integral Role of Architecture in Human Existence and Community

It fits our concept that design should give life to the potential hidden within our daily lives. The distance between the numbers 21 and 21 is meant to be the space between human eyes, which describes this place as the "viewpoint" of design, i.e. Design Sight, and how important it is to observe things with a mind free of distractions. The pieces are accompanied by a graphic display with a large layout of 50 photographs of products. Taken by the photographer Gottingham, the large images lie on the walls behind the products, so visitors can witness details that are difficult to catch with the naked eye. Meanwhile, some of the products are showcased in room-like installations designed by interior designer Yumika Yoshida enhancing visitors’ experience by explaining how the products are used in real life.

Various installations are featured in the underground rooms and passageways that have been created by complexly combining geometries on the confined site. The dynamic underground space is unimaginable from the outside of the low-lying building. The experience of global pandemic has brought drastic and widespread changes to our life-style, communication methods and sense of community, as well as to people-values and general ways of thinking.

Situated in the vibrant city of Tokyo, the Design Sight Museum contributes to the urban fabric with grace. Ando’s design takes into account the surrounding context, ensuring that the museum stands as a harmonious addition to the cityscape. The integration of green spaces and thoughtful landscaping further emphasizes the connection between the built environment and nature. Roppongi Hills is one of the largest real estate complexes in Japan, based in Roppongi, Minato-ku. The National Art Center (NACT) is a unique and innovative art exhibition facility in Roppongi, Tokyo. Along with Miyake, the graphic designer Taku Satoh and the product designer Naoto Fukasawa acted as directors, and the three directors envisioned a space that would offer a fresh perspective on how to interpret and appreciate design. The entrance hall, whose sloping ceiling invites visitors down into the subterranean spaces in the depths of the building. Original goods include items related to the building designed by Tadao Ando, and those with the 21_21 DESIGN SIGHT logo designed by Taku Satoh. We can be sure what it is not — imitation, copy, homage, or influence.

From its thoughtfully planned interior spaces to the expressive facade that graces the city skyline, every aspect of the museum tells a story of purposeful design. As visitors explore the galleries and engage with the exhibits, they become part of a narrative that celebrates the intersection of creativity, functionality, and urban integration. The museum’s interior spaces are designed to adapt to a myriad of exhibitions and events.

This area serves as a cultural hotspot, boasting a plethora of attractions beyond the institution. Visitors can explore the Roppongi Hills, a skyscraper complex that combines shops, restaurants, cafes, movie theatres, and the Mori Art Museum, renowned for its contemporary art exhibitions. The National Art Center, Tokyo, another architectural marvel, is nearby, offering an ever-changing lineup of exhibitions. The two-story, 4,252-square-foot museum is actually one of two trapezoidal buildings that Ando designed for the site. Its twin is a single-story, 2,174-square-foot building containing a café.

The building is on the edge of the park area and has 1,700 square meters of floor space, including two galleries and an affiliated café run by chef and restaurateur Takamasa Uetake. Designed by architect Tadao Ando, 21_21 DESIGN SIGHT is a masterpiece of contemporary architecture. Nestled amidst a serene, open public space, seamlessly integrates with its natural surroundings. The decision to submerge 80% of the building’s floor space underground was a deliberate choice to preserve the tranquility of the environment. The success of this ambitious project is a tribute to the skilled craftsmen who meticulously executed the design without compromise, showcasing the pinnacle of Japanese construction expertise. 21_21 DESIGN SIGHT is situated in the heart of Tokyo Midtown, a vibrant and modern district in the Roppongi area of Tokyo, known for its blend of art, culture, and night life.

The museum, a design museum, was created by architect Tadao Ando and fashion designer Issey Miyake. The split-level concrete structure includes a hand-sanded steel roof (whose design was inspired by Issey Miyake's A-POC ("A Piece of Cloth") concept) and 14-meter (46 ft) long glass panels. The building is a low-rise structure consisting of one ground floor and one underground floor. Most of the volume of the building, which has a unique form featuring a roof made from giant steel plates that slope gently down to the ground, is buried underground. Once inside, the space opens out on a scale unimaginable given the building's unobtrusive exterior. The ground floor houses Gallery 3 and shop space, while the underground floor houses two galleries and a naturally lit sunken court.

We have engaged a range of participants, from designers, artists and thinkers, to engineers and researchers, who provide their own perspectives on the future. These ideas have been generated from the act of pondering timelines, whether familiar or yet unknown. The participants' ideas constitute the exhibition content, which manifests itself as "the Future in Plural Form," like a flourishing plant. In the heart of Tokyo, Tadao Ando’s Design Sight Museum stands as a beacon of architectural brilliance and design ingenuity.

It is read as "two-one two-one design sight."21_21 DESIGN SIGHT has its own symbol, a plaque called "The Product Logo," made of a sheet of metal. The plate, inspired by a style of address display panel seen anywhere in Japan, indicates this facility as being a "place" of design. This also represents something that we see all the time but never pay attention to.

The carefully curated exhibition spaces allow visitors to engage with design concepts in a dynamic and immersive manner. The architect’s thoughtful consideration of user experience is palpable as one navigates through the interconnected galleries. For those of us that hold a great interest in architecture and design, the Design Sight (read as “two-one two-one design sight”) behind Roppongi's Tokyo Midtown building is certainly worth a visit. This private design museum, Japan’s first, opened in 2007 and was intended first of all as a tribute to past achievements of Japan in the area of (industrial, architectural, environmental and fashion) design. Secondly, it should also function as a beacon of inspiration on how to approach future endeavors from a design and aesthetic point of view. Furthermore, whereas its seamless steel roof and concrete walls could have made for a cold and overbearing interior, its trapezoidal spaces manage to be both futuristic and intimate.

gate 1 river cruise reviews

Totally Flawless Traveling. That is the best part. Bogdan even made arrangements for us to visit a couple of castles that were not originally on our tour. I have spoke highly of Gate 1 to many others, and will continue to do so. Gate 1 does an amazing job on all counts.

Gate 1 Travel Day 4 – Vienna

She has a sparkling personality and was friendly, professional, and sincere. All the staff were amazing, but she really stood out. When it comes to fleet size, Viking River Cruises stands head and shoulders above Gate 1 Travel (and every other line). It is the world's largest river cruise operator with a fleet of 70 ships, the majority of which make up its fleet of 190-passenger European Longships. It also has ships in Egypt and Asia and is launching its first ship on the Mississippi in 2023.

While we were not is a suite, there was never any indication that anything extra came with the suite. This included marketing materials, reading reviews, and being on the cruise. The lunchtime buffet -- which includes soup, a daily sandwich and dessert served to the table -- is a mealtime highlight. There are themed buffets too, such as a Bavarian feast where staff dress up in costume and the chef carves a whole suckling pig.

You also might find a noticeably younger crowd aboard. Although many passengers are 55+ and seniors, there were some younger couples too. In addition to couples, there were some small groups of friends plus a few solo travelers, who quickly made new friends as a result of the ship's inclusive and welcoming atmosphere. Gate 1 Travel offers escorted tours, European river cruises, independent vacations and customized international vacation packages for less. Our discount travel packages and tour packages to destinations worldwide provide exceptional value, saving our customers time and money. We have taken care of all the details so you don't have to.

The Maitre'd, Marius Miren, could always be found checking to make sure each of us enjoyed our meals. The breakfast buffet provided a variety of delicious choices to start our day. Every member of the wait staff was pleasant and attentive to details. We thoroughly enjoyed our Danube River Cruise. We have gone on many many ocean cruises, but this was our first river cruise and thanks to the ship staff and all the port guides, we will plan more river cruises. Our son had a separate cabin and the staff made it easy for us both to be kept together in every aspect of the trip.

Our servers Jacinta and Amr were so sweet and professional. We sat in the same spot daily to be with them. The bartender Marius was so kind, fun and remembered everything. Marius from the restaurant was hilarious and helpful. The chef threw down some awesome meals and exposed us to local flavors.

This was a river cruise to see tulips, but the old cities were the hit for me. The cruise guide did a wonderful job and was with us on all tours. The activity director was lots of fun, and he, too, was with us on all tours.

Complete Portugal

While most of the time river cruises operate exactly as planned, weather conditions may result in high or low water levels which impact a ship's itinerary and, on occasion, render a ship unable to sail at all. On very rare occasions, other events such as heavy fog, a damaged lock, or an incapacitated vessel blocking the river, may impact a sailing. These events typically occur with little or no notice.

River cruises aren't known for their onboard entertainment, which is generally pretty low-key and confined to a one-man-band resident musician and singer. In 2017, Gate 1 Travel appointed onboard entertainment managers on its European cruises. The result is a fun program of included daily activities that begin with an early morning exercise class. My family and I returned from a Danube Fiver cruise on the Monarch Queen August 25th to September 1. The cruise could not reach its final destination, Regensburg, because of some heavy rains which caused the Danube to rise.

The total tour cost includes the tour price (regular or promotional) and the compulsory local payment. The promotional price is subject to change. Check directly with the operator for the latest price offer. The tour operator requires you to pay only the tour price to purchase your travel.

Viking provides passengers with the option of prepurchasing gratuities and paying them with the final account prior to travel, or having them automatically added to the shipboard account. The lower prices of the cruises are mostly reflected in the food and beverage offerings. More expensive river cruise lines include wine, beer and soda with lunch and dinner and on Monarch Empress there are only complimentary drinks at dinner. Bottled water is provided in the cabin but it is not handed out for shore excursions. Additionally, the ship does not offer a speciality dining venue or option of a light lunch buffet in the lounge.

Of course, there are reasons why the fares are lower than others (see the end of the article), but you certainly won't feel short-changed as the line offers quality cruises without the luxury price tag. Here are 10 reasons to love Gate 1 Travel for a river cruise -- and a few that might mean it's not the right company for you. One of my best Gate one tours because everyone one on the boat really cared that my travel companion and I had the best time.

If you're curious to know the difference between a relative river newcomer and a veteran line, then read on for our Gate 1 Travel versus Viking River Cruises guide.

And just doing spot checking the airfare was cheaper on uniworld-so it might be less than the $600. So if the cabins are still available will go with uniworld. My mom is a little gun shy because of the vantage cancellation. I think she wants to stay with a well know river cruise company even though I told her all companies have done this. The company provides a "one stop shop" for booking a vacation and offers Travelex Travel Protection that covers trip cancellation, interruption, baggage loss or delay, medical expenses and more.

Viking sails on the Danube, Rhine, Main, Rhone, Saone, Seine, Elbe, Douro, Nile, Mekong, and the waterways of Holland. Additionally, with its fleet of ocean ships it also offers a combined river and ocean vacation that cover the Rhine and Norwegian fjords. We really enjoyed the Sound of Music riverboat. Our guide, Tony was excellent full of all types of information. Fares cover red and white wine, beer and soda with dinner.

What’s more, rooms can be configured with one or two beds; when configured with one, you’ll sleep in comfort in a bed that is larger than a U.S. full-sized. With Gate 1 Travel, there is never more than one included excursion per day, and all of them last approximately two to four hours.

How Price, Inclusions and Booking Policies Compare on Gate 1 vs. Viking River Cruises

Additionally, the ship does not offer a speciality dining venue or option of a light lunch buffet in the lounge. That said, Monarch Empress does have some surprising touches of luxury such as sparkling wine with breakfast, which you normally only get with more expensive upscale lines. On Gate 1 passengers settle onboard gratuities at the end of the cruise and the suggested amount is provided on the travel documents and can vary from itinerary to itinerary. However, the recommended amount is around $14 per person, per day for the crew. Additionally, the suggested gratuity for the cruise director and activity director is $4 and $2 per passenger, per day, respectively. For shore excursions, the recommended gratuity for local guides is $3 per person and $2 per passenger for drivers.

Again - not Gate 1's fault.Would we do another Gate 1 river cruise? Absolutely - though we might opt for a more predictably cooler time of year. Finally - thanks for all of the support and info you provided, the questions you answered, leading up to the trip. Just some special recognition for several individuals that always seemed to go out of their way to make this a wonderful experience. But, Miklos, our tour director was superb in every way.

We've been on two GCT river cruises, and thoroughly enjoyed both. One was Bucharest to Budapest and the other was the Elbe trip. I thought the food was excellent, especially on the Elbe, but the emphasis is really on the area you are visiting. You learn more than the location of the nearest souvenir shop, and we've had really good program directors.

Kate our tour director/cruise director was wonderful. She was highly organized, friendly and had a wonderful sense of humor. I am quite certain that some days she felt like she was herding cats, but she was ALWAYS so caring and kind. Amsterdam is a beautiful, vibrant city. The whole river cruise was wonderful, and they are always feeding you so much great food and drinks!!

Poor customer service

The stateroom was perfect, lots of storage space. The Lady that took care of our room, Irena was the sweetest lady. The food was very good, the presentation was amazing.I look forward to take another river cruise on the Monarch Queen. Bart was very professional, accommodating and willing to help everyone.

With Viking, the recommended amount is stated in euros and is 18 euros per person, per day for the ship's staff and crew, and 2 euros per person, per day for the program director. On shore excursions, the recommended tip is 2 euros for local city guides and 1 euro for bus drivers. Viking provides passengers with the option of prepurchasing gratuities and paying them with the final account prior to travel, or having them automatically added to the shipboard account. I wanted to take a moment to express my heartfelt gratitude for Krisztina and the unforgettable trip from Munich to Budapest aboard the Monarch Queen rivers cruise. It was an incredible experience, and I can't thank her enough for being our tour director and guide throughout this journey. Her knowledge, enthusiasm, and dedication truly made this trip exceptional.

They gave top notch service, always there to help. We had two wonderful nights of entertainment from outside the ship. The evening games and talent night were also outstanding.

Bogdan even made arrangements for us to visit a couple of castles that were not originally on our tour. I have spoke highly of Gate 1 to many others, and will continue to do so. This was the first time my husband and I have booked travel through Gate 1.

It was at the recommendation of our dear friends, who traveled with you previously and said you were the best. We just completed a Rhine River cruise, and it was spectacular and life-changing! We had never been on a river cruise before, and we thought it would be an extra special way to celebrate our 25th wedding anniversary.
